Te Ao Hurihuri – Cyber Bullying

I decided to look into cyber bullying not just in New Zealand, but worldwide. I chose this topic as its also my Agent of Change topic and is a topic i personally feel strongly and deeply about. Cyber bullying is the use of electronic communication to bully a person, typically by sending messages of an intimidating or threatening nature. Cyber Bullying generally happens in teenagers between the ages of 10 and 18. DoSomething.Org states that “nearly 43% of kids have been bullied online and 1 in 4 has had it happen more than once and about 75% of students admit they have visited a website bashing another student.” “11 Facts About Cyber Bullying | Dosomething.Org | Volunteer For Social Change”) Cyber bullying occurs on social media sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Ask.fm and Twitter. not only does it occur on social media it also happens over texting and calling or emailing. knowing that “75% of teenagers admit to bashing other teenagers in some form of cyber bullying” is frightening and cyber bullying messes with emotions and can cause depression and suicide. DoSomething.Org also states that “bullying victims are 2 to 9 times more likely to consider committing suicide.” There is a significant link to Cyber bullying and depression and suicide.
